INSTRUMENTS

Instrument design/construction has been a major part of my practice for a couple of years now. I find instrument building to fall right in the sweet spot between aesthetic considerations and functional, useable design, also it is just really cool. The history of experimental instrument builders is so rich and inspiring, with figures like Bart Hopkin, Hans Reichel, Daniel Fishkin, Yuli Landman, and Peter Blasser being heroes of mine since I was a teenager. I hope to continue the tradition and explore the boundaries of what a musical instrument can become. 

The Recumbent Ponticello was built for From Porch To Patio, a show curated by Jaeden Hannus at Bodock in Chicago. The piece challenges conventional forms of both furniture and musical instruments, and was an interactive piece, with dozens of gallery-goers mounting and trying out the noisy cello chair at the opening.  Here is a link to the Newcity Article written about the show
My prototype Daxophone Chair was built as part of a show at Comfort Station, in Chicago IL.  I was following in the giant footsteps of Hans Reichel and Daniel Fishkin, pioneers of the wooden-tongue instrument
